"It is better to beg forgiveness than to ask for permission"Humans are said to be the only list-making animal. Great. That point filled some more space in this post.
But I do also bring it up because, we are, due to this apparent, species-specific talent, inundated with lists on a daily basis. In fact, in the world of social media marketing, lists are one of the types of "shareable" blog content that are most frequently pushed to be produced. Why? Because, we love lists, and in the world of blog content, the concise, categorical, ranking, or suspense filled simplicity of lists (oooh man... what is going to be number one, I can't wait!) always proves to be popular among readers. So there you have it, it's a vicious cycle of human interest, we make lists and we love reading lists, whether or not they have much of an impact on our daily activities, productivity, or overall life-fulfilling goals.
Anyway, for the modern-man in the common era year of 2012 (maybe our last), in a Chapters on Saturday night, while wasting time before a movie, I found what has proven to be the best list of the year, all 30 days of it, so far. The 2012 Man-ifesto. I agree with most, disagree with some, and wholly accept that all are potentially perfectly suitable pieces of wisdom to live by. So yes, here are 53 points of unbridled insight for the modern gentleman this year, and any afterwards if, indeed, we are granted such fortune by the Mayans.

40. You decide if you are going to succeed or fail. It is a personal decision. Luck does not come into it. The decision process goes by many names - creative visualisation, neuro-linguistic programming, the power of positive thinking, self-hypnosis - but it all comes back to the same thing. If you tell yourself you are going to do something well, and you tell yourself until you can actually see yourself doing it well, then you will. And if you picture yourself lumbering towards the cold sweat of failure, then success is an impossibility. Believe in yourself. Be your own greatest ally. Do not let negative thoughts into your mind. There will be enough people in your life who will be only too eager to underestimate you, to denigrate you, to put you down. Never do it to yourself.
